OUR STORY

The natural clear-spring Lielbata is the largest one in Latvia and one of the rare clear-springs in the Northern Europe known for biologically active water with the correct properties. The Lielbata spring begins its journey in the west and moves to the east, it flows towards the sun, bringing energy and a new day, therefore the spring has been considered magical, healing and even sacred for a long time.

The history of the Lielbata spring is as old and as strong as the land from the depths of which it flows. Bata, the historical name of the spring location, was first mentioned in historical sources in 1253, when it was referred to in a contract on the division of Courland concluded by the Livonian Order and Bishopric of Courland. In 1822, the former Vainode or Lielbata Manor House was built near the spring by the noble von der Osten-Sacken family. Bata was not selected by chance, the family chose this place because of the natural, clear and healing environment and the remarkable clear-spring found near the manor-house-to-be.

The Baron’s family would drink the energizing spring water directly from the spring itself. They would also swim in it, and it didn’t take long for word to get around that it was the spring water that multiplied the beauty of the Baroness and improved the Baron’s well-being and health condition. The energizing, cleansing and healing properties of the water were the qualities due to which locals would regularly visit the spring in order to soak in the power of nature through its water.

In 1923, the Baron gifted the Osten-Sacken family manor to the state of Latvia, and in it, the recreation center “Saulkalne” was created – a place where anyone could regain their strength in a beautiful and peaceful environment by enjoying nature’s power in various ways, including the possibilities provided by the Lielbata clear-spring.

Since 2000, the territory of the Lielbata manor has been private property, and the production of bottled spring water was launched in 2012.  The spring is located on territory free of construction, industry or any other types of harmful activity. It is an ecologically clean environment, and the owners of the spring consider its preservation to be one of their top priorities.
